Dr Mike Hollows is a freelance author and doctor of creative writing based in Liverpool. He has published historical fiction for @HQStories(HarperCollins), science fiction and fantasy for Black Library (Games Workshop), as well as tie-in fiction for other games companies. Mike has an MA in writing from Liverpool John Moores University, and a PGCert in Teaching Creative Writing for the University of Cambridge.

His debut novel Goodbye for Now, a historical fiction set in the First World War, was published by HQ Digital/HarperCollins in October 2018, and his second The German Nurse was published in 2020.

Originally from London, Mike moved to Liverpool in 2010 to teach Audio Engineering. Having told stories since he was little, he always wanted to write. Enrolling on an MA Writing course at Liverpool John Moores University, he graduated in 2016 and parts of the work from the course are featured within this website.
He worked as an Audio Engineering lecturer at SAE Liverpool and University of Chester, teaching a new generation how to be sound engineers as well as teaching academic writing and research, before going freelance in 2017 to focus on his PhD and writing.
He recently finished his PhD in Creative Writing, writing a science fiction novel and analysis the ‘Impact of the Second World War on the Golden Age of Science Fiction from 1940-1970‘. He also graduated from a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing at University of Cambridge, and is always looking for teaching opportunites to pass on his experience of creative writing and the industry. He is currently studying towards an MSc Psychology in Education course, using it to further his understanding of Creative Writing Pedagogy, with an interest in neurodivergent learning.
Mike was diagnosed with ADHD in January 2024 and has since been exploring how this affects his writing and narrative decisios. He was also diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in 1999 after almost three years of illness and tests, and is keen to raise awareness about the condition.
